Province's Pension Plan Changes - Phone-In

Posted by Bill van Asperen

PensionPlanChangesPhoneIn.jpgIslanders are living longer, and retiring sooner. With that good news comes pressure on the public sector pension plan, according to the province. Weeks ago, Finance Minister Wes Sheridan announced an overhaul of the pension plan. The changes eliminate guaranteed cost of living increases, raise the retirement age to qualify and change the way pension salary is calculated.

Civil service unions have been expressing strong opposition to these changes. Hundreds of members have come out to public meetings across the Island to share disappointment and concerns. Here's our special Island Morning phone-in, with guests Finance Minister Wes Sheridan and Debbie Bovyer, president of the Union of Public Sector Employees. We also took calls asking, "Do you agree with the province's pension plan changes?"
