Shruthi Bandi, a Grade 8 student from Queen Charlotte Intermediate, was at the national science fair recently held in Windsor, Ontario.  Shruthi won gold in the Junior Division. She was also awarded a Discovery Challenge Award, handed out to projects that create new knowledge.

Shruthi has found bacteria which can fight against Staph infections commonly caught in hospitals. Many staph infections are now resistant to antibiotics. Shruthi believes her research could lead to a new antibiotic. Lindsay Carroll met Shruthi at Queen Charlotte to find out more about her project called "Why Micro-organisms are useful to humans".

Teacher cutbacks concern parents in Montague

Posted by Bill van Asperen

TeacherCutsIM.jpgSome parents in Montague have done their homework and say the province's latest teacher cuts are hitting their schools a lot harder than in other parts of PEI.

Shauna Mellish has a daughter in Grade Two at Montague Consolidated. She says of the 32 teaching positions being cut across the Island -- 10 per cent are coming from her school. She says it's just as unfair across the entire Montague family of schools... which are taking a THIRD of the provincial cuts.

We also hear from the Superintendent of the English school board, Cynthia Fleet.
