Researchers at UPEI are looking at the health benefits of blueberry juice, and whether it can lower blood pressure, and help people with heart disease and diabetes.

Researcher Kathy Gotchell-Pass joins us in the studio. They are looking for people to participate in the study who are overweight, non-smokers, not diabetic, and between the ages of 21-65. Click here for more information about the nutrition research study.

Lean Healthcare

Posted by Bill van Asperen

Healthcare.jpgA consultancy group was paid approximately 100-thousand dollars a year to make Island healthcare more efficient and effective. Health PEI says it's already made some significant improvements in hospital admissions. Several projects have already been completed, one to reduce falls at a provincial nursing care facility, and another to improve access at family doctors' offices. We spoke with Dale Schattenkirk, president of the Learning to See consultancy group, based in Regina, and Rick Adams, the executive director of Corporate Services and Long-term Care for Health PEI.

In the U.S...the legal drinking age is 21. Here in Canada, it's a little younger - 18 or 19, depending on the province. Russ Callaghan is an associate professor at the University of Northern BC, says he wants to change that.

He just published a study in the journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence. In that report, he suggests every province, including PEI, raise the drinking age to 21. And with good reason -- he says it would save the lives of 32 young men each year from alcohol-related deaths. Laura Chapin spoke to Russ Callaghan about his study.
