Ask Cindy

Well, Cindy has answered a bunch of your questions so click through to the blog post to read what she had to say!

You may not know this, but Cindy - having grown up in Montreal - is fluent in French. Recently she gave an interview to the Paris-based country magazine DREAMWEST. If you pick up the Dec - Feb/2010 issue, which is now on newsstands in France, you can read the article on page 36.

In other Heartland news, it is pretty quiet in Calgary as the cast and crew are taking a break after finishing filming Season 3's last episodes. So that everyone can enjoy the Holiday Season, I'm not going to give you an actor to ask questions to for a couple of weeks but I promise I'll resume this popular feature in the New Year! Also, I'm going to forgo the usual Thursday post this week...Blog Whisperer is taking Christmas Eve off! But I promise I'll be back next week (before New Years) to talk about the next episode.

And as for the New Year, you're going to love January, because all 5 Sundays are going to premiere a brand new episode from Season 3, starting with Episode 310, which answers questions many of you have agonizing over. However, there are more startling developments coming up that will raise additional questions. What is a fan of this series supposed to do, you might ask? Well, just have patience! All will eventually will be revealed...

Thanks to those who came down last Saturday to the Chinook Centre and were interviewed for the television commercials. They shot a lot of footage and before long you'll see new Heartland testimonial commercials on CBC!

And now... heeeeeeeeeeere's Cindy!

Q: Had you read any of the Heartland books/heard of Heartland before auditioning for the show?
Posted by: lisa on December 17, 2009 at 07:32 AM

A: I'd actually never heard of "Heartland" before I auditioned for the show, but when I researched the books I realized how popular they were. When I got cast as Ashley I decided to read some of the books and thought they were great!

Q: Hi Cindy I love your character in the show! I was just wondering: what has been your favourite episode?
Posted by: Kate on December 14, 2009 at 01:31 PM

A: I actually have 2 favourite episodes and they're from season 2, episode 207 and 208. I felt that the writers really allowed me to experiment with different emotional sides of Ashley that the audience hadn't seen yet. It was very challenging for me, but that's what I love and ultimately I felt really proud of my work.

Q: Hey Cindy,
wow. You are really amazing as Ash. I love Ash since the second season and I love to see what happens with her. Also I enjoy to see her and Caleb. Hope they will get together in the near future. Love them! So. Firstly I'd like to greet you from Germany. Here it isn't so cold as in Calgary. I read the weather forecast and WOW: -30 degrees. Here we have only -2 degrees. Can't imagine how it is to live with this weather. OMG. And. Wow. I watched that amazing movie called "Picture This" with Ashley Tisdale and YOU. It was awesome to see you in that crazy movie! One of my favourite movies! But okay. Back to the actual topic! So. Great! Here is my question: What do you think about the relationship between Ash and Caleb? Do you want to see them together? Thanks ;)
Keep up your amazing work! Love ya!
Linda :)

A: WOW! It's great to hear from fans all the way out in Germany! I think Ashley and Caleb have a wonderful relationship and I definitely look forward to seeing it develop (although I can't give anything away, but I guarantee you won't be disappointed). Their dynamic is very special and I think together they spice things up and add humour to "Heartland".

Q: Cindy what is your favourite character to work with on the set? You do a great job playing Ashley. Jenna
Posted by: Jenna on December 14, 2009 at 12:09 PM

A: I LOVE working with Wanda Cannon, who plays Val, Ashley's mom. Wanda and I have a very close, off screen relationship; therefore working together is very comfortable and challenging. She's just so talented, and brings out the best in me.

Q: Hey Cindy, I was wondering, whether you always wanted to be an actress or whether that only became an ambition is later life.
By the way I really enjoy your performance in all of the Heartland episodes, I think during the first season you definitely created tension, but now Ashley and Caleb's love hate relationship is a comic relief when things get too serious, yet we can also tell they are very much in love. Thank you for doing such an amazing job.
Posted by: Emma on December 14, 2009 at 01:05 PM

A: Acting has always been my passion. I always loved entertaining and performing in front of an audience. I was in my elementary and high school plays. I got accepted into theatre school, got an agent, and have worked ever since.

Q: Hey Cindy. Love you on Heartland. Ashley is turning out to be such a complex character, and not the bratty kid I know from the book series. Yeah, I love how you portray her, especially the tension between Ashley and Caleb. So, my question:
How hard was it to be mean to Kerry James in the episode where Ashley lost her temper with Caleb after learning that Caleb had accepted money from Val to leave for the rodeo?
Thank you so much for providing weekly entertainment for a huge fan, can't wait for the new episode in January.
Posted by: Milly on December 14, 2009 at 01:05 PM

A: Kerry James has become one of my friends, so obviously being angry at him isn't easy, but by understanding the given circumstances of the scene and using my imagination I was able to create the truthful emotion that Ashley was to feel; anger, deception, and sadness.

Q: Hey Cindy (: Greets from North Bay, Ontario!
I'd like to start with, I really like how you play you can portray such a 'mean' character, but still make us have a soft spot for her when she's being nice for a change. My question would have to be:
How different is your personality from Ashley's? What traits do you share, and which do you differ?
Thanks a billion! - Shayla
Posted by: shayla on December 14, 2009 at 03:29 PM

A: I think Ashley is a very complex character and she has many qualities as well as faults. I would have to say the characteristic I share most with Ashley is her passion and hard work. She's always strives to do her very best, such as horse competing, and she is very head strong, when she wants something she goes for it full force. I work hard to get what I want but unlike Ashley, I won't hurt people in the process. I'm very sensitive to other people's feelings.

Q: Hey Cindy! I have to say, you are pretty, amazing at acting, and you are just perfect for Ashley! (I'm sure you're not mean in real life though!)
My question is, we don't see much of Ashley and horses together, so do you ride a lot, or are you just a casual rider?
Keep doing a great job and PLEASE PLEASE come to the USA sometime with some other cast members! I would LOVE to meet you and greetings from the USA!!! We all love you ALL down there! Keep doing a great job in Heartland. And also, when i saw you on the cover of Picture This, i almost screamed! I was like, SHES FROM HEARTLAND! THATS SO FUNNY! I wasn't expecting that.. I haven't seen the movie, but i'm sure its amazing! Well, your in it... duh its good!:) thanks for an awesome performance!
Posted by: Margaret on December 14, 2009 at 02:23 PM

A: I wasn't a rider when I got the role of Ashley, so when the show was picked up I decided to get lots of lessons to make sure I was comfortable. I really like riding, but I only ride when the show requires me to.

Q: Hey Cindy! Love your character on Heartland, you do an amazing job. My question is, what do you like to do on your spare time when your not filming? Is horseback riding one of them?
Thanks Jillian
Posted by: Jillian on December 14, 2009 at 03:50 PM

A: Horseback riding isn't really one of my hobbies. I only started taking lessons for "Heartland", although I like it very much. During my spare time I love shopping, reading, working out, watching movies, and spending time with my boyfriend and friends.

Q: Hey Cindy! I was just wondering what you think the funniest thing that ever happened on set is? Thanks, Kimberly
Posted by: Kim Ward on December 14, 2009 at 04:00 PM

A: So many funny things happen, everyday on the set of Heartland, so I couldn't pick just one. We all like to share a good laugh!

Q: I am eight years old and I watch your show every week. My question for you is: Are you good friends with Amber and Kerry? I live in the same hometown as Kerry (West Kelowna).
Posted by: Mari Weill on December 14, 2009 at 09:17 PM

A: The Heartland cast and crew is like a big family and Amber and Kerry have definitely become good friends of mine in the last few years. Although Amber and I live on opposite sides of the country we still manage to stay in touch even when were not shooting.

Q: Hi Cindy! I have to say how impressed I am with how far you have brought the character of Ashley. I used to hate her, and now I'm really starting to enjoy seeing her (or you I should say!). Thank you for putting so much work to make this character more cheerful!
So my question.... What is the hardest thing for you being Ashley?
Merry Christmas!
Posted by: Phoebs on December 14, 2009 at 09:44 PM

A: The most important thing to me, when I first started interpreting Ashley's character, was to make sure she was believable and not some two dimensional stereotype! Everyone has more then one side to him or her, Ashley's not just a mean and spoiled teenager, she has layers to her personality and with the help of the writers, I think we succeeded in creating truth.

Q: Hi Cindy! It must be quite difficult to portray Ashley, but you definitely do a fantastic job! Is there any kind of character that you'd like to play in a movie/tv series, a character that would be a challenge for you to portray? Thanks! Merry Christmas! Best wishes from the Netherlands, Anouk

A: Acting in a sitcom with a live studio audience, like Seinfeld or Friends, is a dream of mine, I think comedy is a huge challenge!

Q: Hey Cindy, What is your favourite horse you have seen or worked with on the show?
Posted by: Nikki on December 14, 2009 at 03:23 PM

A: The only horse I've really worked closely with is Apollo, so he's definitely my favourite.

Q: Hi, You absolutely make a perfect Ashley. My question is if you didn't become an actress which other career would you have chosen? Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Lil' L
Posted by: Lil' Lara on December 15, 2009 at 04:00 PM

A: I never considered another profession because acting has always been what I've loved to do.

Q: Heey Cindy - My name is Paige and I'm in love with the show Heartland and all the characters!! I also wanted to say your an amazing actress for the part of Ashley and I hope there's a season 4. My question for you is What is your favourite chip and ice cream flavour? Anyways can't wait for Heartland to come back!!! Hope to meet you some day!! I met Graham & Amber @ The Royal Winter Fair 2009 and they are hilarious because my best friend has the same name as me and they thought that was so cool!! Can't wait to hear your answer!!!
Paige :)
Posted by: Paige on December 14, 2009 at 06:04 PM

A: My favourite chip flavour is BBQ and my favourite ice cream is vanilla!

Q: Hey Cindy ! My question is... your character was portrayed as the 'mean girl' for the first few seasons, and now we are able to see a nicer side of Ashley. Do you like playing the 'mean' or 'nice' version of Ashley better? Why?
Thanks for your time! -Danielle :)
Posted by: Danielle T on December 15, 2009 at 07:58 PM

A: I really like to play both because that way it keeps the audience guessing and it makes Ashley believable.

Q: Hi Cindy, Christmas is quickly approaching and if you are anything like me there will be tons to do; meet with friends, spend time with family and eat lost of yummy food. I was wondering if you have a favourite holiday tradition...Thanks, Sarah.
Posted by: Sarah on December 16, 2009 at 06:39 PM

A: I don't have any specific traditions just lots of eating and spending time with my friends and family!

Q: Hi Cindy,
I have really enjoyed watching your character develop, especially over the past two seasons. How has the storyline with Ashley's mom's health affected you?
Thanks! Keep up the incredible work!
Posted by: Melissa on December 15, 2009 at 07:45 AM

A: Val's disease affected how I decided to approach the scenes as Ashley. I think Ashley became more compassionate, sensitive, and attentive to her mother's needs and I was really happy the writers decided to integrate that storyline because it allowed Ashley and Val to put their troubles aside.
