Recipe: Cheese Curling Rock

Watching the Olympic Games calls for an epic spread of snacks. And because you’ll want to optimize your time in front of the TV, this make-ahead cheese ball is the perfect accompaniment to any viewing party you may be throwing over the next couple of weeks. Plus, it’s made to look like a curling rock, and we can’t think of anything more Canadian.


2 bricks cream cheese, room temperature (250g each)
2 cups grated old Canadian cheddar
½ bunch green onion, thinly sliced
Juice of half a lemon
1 clove garlic, rasped
1 small chili, seeds removed, minced
1 tsp sesame oil
Pinch of salt and pepper
1 tsp black pepper
½ cup black sesame seeds and 3 tbsp white sesame seeds, toasted and crushed
1 red bell pepper top with a curved stem
1 yellow bell pepper top with a curved stem
Crackers and cut veggies of your choice to serve


To a large mixing bowl add softened cream cheese, grated cheddar, green onion, lemon juice, garlic, chili, sesame oil and salt and pepper to taste and mix until fully combined. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour. Remove from fridge and form into 2 equal sized balls and flatten slightly, approx. 5 inches in diameter and 1 ½ inch in height. Transfer crushed sesame seeds to a large dinner plate along with 1 tsp black pepper and whisk and roll your ball to cover all sides. Top each with a bell pepper top. Place in the middle of a serving platter and surround with crackers and cut veggies of your choice, enjoy!
