Wemindji birth raises questions about Cree midwifery program

The clinic in Wemindji was busy on the night of April 8th when an unexpected little guest arrived. Cree women are usually sent to Val D'or or Montreal to give birth. But not this time, as surprised grandmother Jacqueline Blackned explained to Melissa Natachequan.

The Cree Health Board is working on having a midwifery program and also a birthing centre in the future. Today, the Cree clinics are not equipped to help women in labour. Lisa Petagumskum, who works for the Cree Health Board says the midwifery program will start within 4 years which is the end of a 5 year agreement they have signed for funding. Vincent Georgekish spoke with her about why this is a priority.
