In the Field with The Meadows

Our spring live remote broadcasts wrapped up with a visit to southeast Edmonton and the growing community of The Meadows. The massive community of 22,000 people lies east of Mill Woods and is one of the city's most diverse. So, it should not have come as a huge surprise that our gathering spot -- Velma E. Baker School on 43A Avenue -- values its multicultural composition. In fact, the school, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, was holding its annual Multicultural Day when we arrived. Along with some free coffee and donuts, we were treated some talented, and downright adorable cultural performances from the elementary school students, a sneak peek into the new community recreation centre, and a rare interview with Velma Baker herself, the namesake of the school. A HUGE thank you to the students, staff and teachers at Velma E. Baker School and The Meadows Community League. Enjoy the photos and audio from our broadcast below, and we'll be back with live broadcasts in the fall. Meanwhile, the Mark About Town team will be in YOUR community soon with weekly stories. If there's a remarkable event or person in your neighbourhood you'd like Mark to visit, e-mail
