This Canadian created the first map of Everest, but you’ve probably never heard of him

Oliver Wheeler was responsible for the success of the 1921 Everest expedition, using a method that was pioneered in Canada’s Rocky Mountains.

A century ago, a British expedition set out to find a route to the world’s highest mountain — Everest. On that journey was a lone Canadian with a big job. Major Oliver Wheeler was tasked with mapping the area and was critical to the expedition’s success.

Using a method developed by his father and perfected at home in the Canadian Rockies, Wheeler was able to create the first map of Everest and one that is still in use today.
