A former wife abuser fights for change in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh — a country of more than 165 million people — seventy-three percent of married women have experienced some form of domestic abuse. Despite tough laws that criminalize domestic violence, patriarchal values and traditional gender norms persist, contributing to an environment in which women are often shamed into silence.

The documentary Untying the Knot takes us into the homes and lives of women who are fighting back against this reality. But what role do men play in the effort to eliminate violence against women?

Meet Maksud, a man who used to abuse his wife but now sees things differently. He shares insight into his changed mentality — and how he’s working to shine a light for other men in his community.
