Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry

India is the world’s movie-making capital. It produces three times as many films as Hollywood and those films are more popular here than ever before; 1 in 7 films released in the UK each year are made in India.

Anita Rani has been fascinated with Bollywood since she was a child and now she’s embarking on a journey through the extraordinary world of sequins and saris to discover how an industry based on centuries old traditions is racing to keep up with the changing tastes of a country with one of the youngest populations on earth.

With exclusive access to the largest films in production across India, Anita will meet some of Bollywood’s biggest stars and uncover the rich history behind the famous dance numbers, the secrets behind creating the biggest action scenes and see how modern Bollywood is using its enormous power to challenge and change Indian society.

She’ll meet the Brits making their fortune in India, drawn by the sheer volume of Bollywood films made  each year. She’ll hear the ‘casting couch’ experiences of some newcomers and find out how a new generation of Bollywood women - from makeup artists to leading ladies – are confronting sexism in the industry.
