Capturing shots of the elusive narwhal presented challenges for the filmmakers on location. 2:06

The narwhal is one of the most mysterious animals on the planet. In Inuit legend, the first was a brave female hunter, caught up in a deadly embrace with the whale she hunted — her braided hair flung out, becoming the twisted tusk.

They live high in the Arctic, moving smoothly under the ice and seeking out cracks to breathe. The crew arrives just as the winter ice is about to break up, allowing the narwhal to roam their ocean home freely.
