Daybreak Again: May 18/19, 2013

Edmonton's Northern Light Theatre closes its season with their production of An Accident by American playwright Lydia Stryk. The show features two of the city's busiest actors, Melissa Thinglestad and Michael Peng and runs until May 25th. Daybreak's Nola Keeler sat down with Michael Peng, an actor who had his own challenges in taking on this show.

The 20th Anniversary of the Women's Words Summer writing week is coming up May 31 to June 9 in Edmonton. The event has been encouraging women with stories to tell, especially new writers, as they are all given the opportunity to work with published and award-winning winning authors to develop the skill of writing. One of those writers is Margot van Sluytman. She's the author of Sawbonna, a book about her own journey of healing through writing, as well as a conflict resolution specialist, specializing in the criminal justice system. Margot will be offering a workshop at Womens Words in using storytelling to provide resilience in your life and she spoke with Russell about the course.

 

When you watch stand-up comedy, either live or on TV, most times it looks pretty effortless to be on a stage and making people laugh. Behind the scenes, it's many hours of writing and testing out material before its ready for the big stage. Alberta comedian, Donovan Deschner, has taken on a very public challenge for himself as over the course of the last year, he's been writing and performing at least 5 minutes of new material in a comedy club. That's such a rare feat, that the event, 260 Minutes is being considered for a Guiness World record. Donovan Deschner will be headlining at the Edmonton Yuk Yuks club on May 24 & 25 and joined Russell in the Daybreak studio.
