Local man honoured in ceremony after buying woman drink and expecting nothing back
VANCOUVER, B.C.—Local man Alex Daley, 34, was recently presented with a "Local Hero" award at the annual mayor's gala after courageously purchasing a drink for a woman in a bar and then respecting the fact that she didn't want to engage in a conversation with him.

It all started on a Friday night when Daley and a few of his friends went out to a local brewpub to celebrate his recent promotion. Daley says he was waiting to order at the bar when he noticed a woman standing there with a female friend. He then said hello, offered to buy her a drink and calmly walked away after she thanked him and returned to her table of friends. Witnesses report that Daley "smiled and told her to have a great night and went about the rest of his night with his own friends."
Bartender Mark Wiese remembers the moment with absolute clarity and becomes emotional while recounting the interaction. "He just sort of asked her what she'd like to drink and then they spoke for a minute or two and then they both went on with their lives. It's pretty rare to see a man spend upwards of seven dollars and not become upset when the woman doesn't then want to have a 45-minute conversation with him while being caressed."
Attendees honoured alongside Daley also included Robert Griffin, a man who saw a woman wearing shorts last week when it was hot outside and didn't make a comment about her body, and Daniel Grover, who chose a seat on a late night and nearly empty bus that was not directly next to a woman who was alone.
When asked how he felt being honoured at a ceremony amongst such prestigious citizens, Daley simply stated, "I'm confused why not being an aggressive creep is still considered a notable achievement, but I'm glad to see we are moving in the right direction."
