Sandra Birdsell is the author of six novels and three short story collections. Her books include Waiting for Joe, The Two-Headed Calf and The Chrome Suite, all of which were finalists for the Governor General's Literary Award for fiction. She received a Scotiabank Giller Prize nomination in 2001 for The Russlander. The fifth of 11 children, Birdsell grew up in the Canadian prairies with her Cree-Métis father and Russian-Canadian mother. She's the founder of the Manitoba Writers' Guild and 1993 recipient of the Marian Engel Award.
