Rona Ambrose to pen children's book celebrating International Day of the Girl
Former federal politician Rona Ambrose is teaming up with Kids Can Press for a book about girls' rights and the creation of the UN's International Day of the Girl Child.
The International Day of the Girl — occurring this year on Oct. 11, 2017 — is a day organized by the UN to recognize that girls all over the world deserve to have basic human rights. Ambrose, the former interim leader of the federal Conservative Party and the opposition leader between 2015 and 2017, will work author Jessica Dee Humphreys and an illustrator to be named at a later date. Humphreys is the author of Child Soldier: When Boys and Girls Are Used in War and has written two books with Roméo Dallaire.
The yet to be titled picture book will be based on interviews with children to help them better understand and appreciate the importance of gender equality and highlight the meaning behind the UN resolution to recognize girls' rights around the world.
A portion of the proceeds from Canadian sales of the book — to be published in 2020 — will support child rights charity organization Plan International Canada's Because I am a Girl Fund.
