Andrea Benoit wins $30K National Business Book Award for book about Canadian cosmetics company MAC

 University of Toronto professor Andrea Benoit has won the 2020 National Business Book Award for Viva MAC: AIDS, Fashion, and the Philanthropic Practices of MAC Cosmetics.

The $30,000 prize annually recognizes a Canadian business book of nonfiction.

Viva MAC looks at corporate philanthropy in the cosmetics industry and recounts how MAC, a Canadian makeup brand, built social responsibility into its business model.

Benoit has a PhD in media studies. Her research focuses on social causes, representations of gender and promotional culture.

The other finalists were Dragons' Den star Arlene Dickinson for her memoir ReinventionUniversity of Toronto professor Wendy Dobson for Living with China, which examines Canada's relationship with China; and John Stefanini for his memoir More Than We Bargained For: An Untold Story of Exploitation & Redemption Among the Men Who Built Modern Canada, which chronicles his tenure as a construction industry union organizer.

The shortlist and winner were chosen by a jury comprised of former host of CBC's The National, Peter Mansbridge; the dean of McMaster University's DeGroote School of Business, Leonard Waverman; adjudicator Deirdre McMurdy; businessperson David Denison; writer and former book publisher Anna Porter; and Senator Pamela Wallin.

Last year's winner was Chris Turner for The Patch, which explores the politics and people involved with the development of the northern Alberta oilsands.

Other past winners include Chrystia Freeland, Daniel Levitin, Gordon Pitts and Naomi Klein.
