The TV show How I Met Your Father follows the same general idea as its predecessor, How I Met Your Mother. It's about a group of friends navigating dating in New York — but with a modern twist.

Instead of following Ted as he and his friends look for love and hang out at MacLaren's Pub seemingly every night, there's a whole new crew led by budding photographer Sophie (played by Hilary Duff), navigating everything from career setbacks to the pitfalls of dating apps.

The show is in its second season, and one of the standouts of the sequel reboot is actor and comedian Tien Tran, who plays Ellen on the show. Her character is queer, recently divorced, and she's just moved to the city from a small farming town.

Tran tells Tom Power about getting her first big TV role, and why she was so excited to play a character like Ellen.
