Lesson Plan:

For Teachers: The Climate of Nunavut

Type: Introductory
Subjects: Social Studies, Geography, Science
Duration: 1 to 2 lessons
Purpose: To investigate the climate and weather patterns of a given location
Summary: In this introductory activity, students will investigate the climate and weather patterns of Nunavut.

Before Exploring

Ask students what they know about the Inuit and the north. Together, create a list of key words that can be used to focus their investigation of the climate and weather patterns of the north.

Outline the Opportunity

Divide students into small groups of 3 or 4. Have them search the Creation of Nunavut topic on the CBC Digital Archives website for references to the climate of Nunavut, and ways in which the Inuit respond to the climate. Students should then create a chart identifying each response as either traditional or modern.

As they complete their search, students should define or explain the following terms:

Aurora Borealis


Tea Boiling Competition

Dog Team

Midnight Sun

Once the investigations are complete, students should search other sources to find references to the monthly climate and weather patterns. Using all of their information, students should create a list of data and turn it into graphs to illustrate the mean monthly temperatures, average monthly precipitation and monthly hours of daylight in Nunavut.

Revisit and Reflect

Students should share their work with the class. Encourage students to compare data and to question one another about both their method of data gathering and their results.


Students can complete a similar search for climate information about a southern region in Canada, preferably near their home. They should compare the results of this study with the study they did of the climate in Nunavut, and compare and contrast how the people of each area respond to their climate.
