Yousuf Karsh on photographing Canadians

The Story

Photographer Yousuf Karsh is well known for his work photographing people in his Ottawa studio. In 1978, has published a book of his photos of Canadians, some famous and some unknown. He joins Take 30 host Hana Gartner to discuss how he chose the volume's photos, and how he chooses whose picture he will take. They talk about his trademark photography style, which often features the subject's hands; how his meeting with Prime Minister Mackenzie King moved his career forward with an introduction to Vincent Massey; and the pleasure he takes in vacation and personal snapshots using his Instamatic and Rolleiflex cameras.
