William and Kate’s engagement excites Torontonians

Big news from England: Prince William and his long-time girlfriend, Kate Middleton, are going to be married. In this November 2010 report, CBC-TV's local Toronto newscast is finding out how people in Toronto feel about the announcement. "I would marry a prince," jokes one young man. Meanwhile, a woman sipping tea at Toronto's Windsor Arms hotel is thrilled to hear about the engagement. "Oh my goodness, that's great news," she exclaims. "They're a cute couple."

Did You know?


• Prince William and Kate Middleton first met when they were students at St. Andrews University in Scotland in 2001. In 2002 they became flatmates, living in a house with a few other students. They were just friends initially, but by Christmas 2003 there were rumours that the pair had started dating.
 

• Due to their long courtship, the British press dubbed Middleton "Waity Katie," implying that she was waiting around for the prince to propose.

 

• Kate had been working at her parents' party supply business, Party Pieces Ltd., prior to the engagement. But in January 2011, it was announced that she was quitting her job in order to focus on the wedding and prepare "for her future life."

 

• William once famously told a reporter he didn't want to get married until he was at least 28. True to his word, William --who was born on June 21, 1982 -- asked Kate to marry him several months after his 28th birthday.

 

• When William proposed to Kate while on holiday in Kenya, he gave her the engagement ring that had belonged his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. The ring features 14 diamonds encircling an 18-carat sapphire.

 

• Prince William is second in the line of succession for the British throne. His father, Prince Charles, is first in line.

 

• The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is scheduled for April 29, 2011, at London's Westminster Abbey.

 

• In February 2011, it was announced that William and Kate would be making their first official visit to Canada as a married couple from the end of June until mid-July, 2011. They will be spending Canada Day in Ottawa.
