This week, CBC Radio's youth program Anybody Home? asked listeners in the Maritimes for their thoughts on why church attendance is dropping in Canada. Are Canadians less devout than they used to be, or is it something about church in particular? Listen in to this 1983 broadcast and find out!

Did You know?


• Church attendance in Canada has seen a steady and massive decline in recent decades. A survey conducted in 1950 found 75 per cent of Canadians, including 88 per cent of Quebecers, where churchgoers. By 2000, just 32 per cent of Canadians, including  22 per cent of Quebecers, were attending.

• There are also far fewer priests in Canada in modern times. By 1970, there were 21,191 priests in Canada, but in 2000, there were fewer than 10,000.
