The start of the Man In Motion World Tour

The Story

Inspired by friend Terry Fox, Rick Hansen sets off from Vancouver on his Man In Motion World Tour, determined to wheel around the world and raise $10 million for spinal cord research. He also wants to raise public awareness about people with disabilities, and prove that handicapped people can live full, productive lives. In this CBC Television clip the day before the start of the tour, Hansen talks to Valerie Pringle about his goals.

Did You know?

• Hansen and his seven-person crew began the tour from Vancouver's Oakridge Shopping Mall on March 21, 1985. His goal was to wheel 25,845 miles (40,073 kilometres) around the globe; a distance equal to the circumference of the earth.
