The happy barbarian?

The Story

In a Winnipeg studio, eight feisty teenagers settle down to a fierce and lively debate. The question at hand: was the barbarian happier than civilized man? The teens are unable to come to a consensus on the matter and argue back and forth. The barbarian didn't have to worry about his rent! But the barbarian clubbed his wife over the head! The young teens politely banter but ultimately reach no conclusions in this CBC Radio clip.

Did You know?

High School Forum debuted in the fall of 1939. The panellists included Leon Dorfman, Charles Walker, Roger Beaufoy, John Graham, Graham Gower, Edna Middleton, Sybil Houston and Louise Gallinger. The program concluded Jan. 20, 1940.
• Other topics the panel discussed included: "How to get a job -- and keep it," "Should school examinations be abolished?" and "Happiness."

• The weekly CBC Radio guide noted that 13 students and recent graduates were recruited to the producer's house and "lured to the kitchen to prepare hot dogs, tea and so on. Of the thirteen possibilities, selected for facility of speech, ability to express themselves on various subjects, and sense of humour, combined with fundamental seriousness, eight were finally chosen to take part in the broadcasts."

• CBC talks producer in the Prairie region, Sheila Maryat, moderated the discussion. The "under-twenties" debated for half an hour to warm up before broadcast.
