Sholem Aleichem’s Town of the Little People

The Story


In this clip, Alan Maitland, as Front Porch Al, reads the story Town of the Little People, by Sholem Aleichem.  He takes us to a town called Kasrilevke, which is inhabited by "poor but cheerful" "little people", whose goal in life is simply to provide for the sabbath.

• Sholem Aleichem is a pseudonym for Sholem Rabinowitz, born Feb. 18, 1859 in Russia. He died May 13, 1916, in New York City.

• His published works include more than 40 novels, stories and plays, in Yiddish.  His Tevye the Dairyman stories were the basis for the musical Fiddler on the Roof.
