Prince William is born

The Story

Just one day after the birth of William on June 21, 1982, an eager crowd of well-wishers has gathered outside the hospital, hoping for a glimpse of the young heir to the throne. They are rewarded with the appearance of the proud parents and a cheer goes up when Prince Charles hands the swaddled bundle to a shy, smiling Diana. In this clip from CBC television news, reporter Eve Savoury says the much-heralded arrival of the new prince ensures the continuity of the beloved British monarchy, and cements the love Britons feel for his mother Diana.
