National Farm Radio Forum: The final forum (1965)

The Story

It's the end of an era in Canadian radio broadcasting: after 24 years on the air, National Farm Radio Forum is going silent. The forums, however, will keep on talking. In every region of Canada, they've got plans to continue adult education programs for rural people. In this last program, aired on March 29, 1965, provincial forum secretaries in five regions share their future plans via a live network hookup.

Program: National Farm Radio Forum

Did You know?

• The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) studied the Farm Forum format in 1952. The program's techniques were then successfully introduced in India, Ghana and France.

• At Farm Forum's peak, about 27,000 people were active participants, though the numbers began to fall in the early 1950s. In an online essay about the program, program founder R. Alex Sim attributed the decline to numerous factors including the introduction of TV in Canada, a happier postwar period, and the inevitable repetition of topics over the years.
