Model Twiggy speaks to the Canadian press in 1967

The Story


Welcomed by high-spirited fraternity brothers, the press corps arrives at a Toronto hotel to photograph and quiz the latest British export and fad: fashion model Twiggy. Host Warren Davis of the CBC-TV show TBA narrates an edited version of the press conference in which Twiggy, under the careful choreography of her manager-boyfriend Justin, responds to questions about marriage, hobbies, fashion, and most importantly, her less-than-curvy figure.

Did You know?


• Twiggy was born Lesley Hornby on Sept. 19, 1949, in London, England. She was discovered by boyfriend Justin de Villeneuve (who was born Nigel Davies in 1939 in London) when she was working in a hair salon.

• On Aug. 26, 1967, The Globe and Mail reported on the press conference. According to the report, Twiggy Enterprises earned a profit of $750,000 dollars in the previous year.

• Twiggy and her manager were in Toronto to promote their fashion brand for Eaton's, which carried their clothing exclusively. Items in the fashion line sold for between $18 and $30.
