Maurice Richard scores his 500th goal

The Story

Ever since the puck dropped on the 1957/58 NHL season, the question foremost on the minds of nearly all Canadiens fans is this: when exactly will the Rocket collect goal number 500? On Oct. 19, 1957, they get their answer as the Canadiens host the Chicago Blackhawks at the Forum. Richard is hovering at the 499-goal mark, and tonight's game seems a likely time for the historic drama to play out. As seen in this retrospective clip, a pass from teammate Jean Béliveau finds Richard, who one-times it past the goalie and bulges the twine with authority. beliveau

Did You know?

• Many fans were counting on Richard to hit 500 in this game, since the Blackhawks had not managed to win a game since being vanquished 5-1 in the Canadiens home opener. Some 14,000 fans were in attendance when it happened.

• Richard's goal came as his team was on the power play. Chicago defenceman Ian Cushenan was serving a two-minute penalty for holding, so his short-handed team faced off against Richard, who was set up to the right of centreman Jean Béliveau with Dicky Moore on the left wing. Defencemen Bernard Geoffrion and Doug Harvey were on the ice.

• The ovation that followed Richard's achievement carried on for more than two full minutes as Richard was congratulated by teammates before acknowledging the supportive outpouring. The Canadiens went on to win the game by a score of 3-1. Richard would add another 44 regular-season goals before retiring two seasons later.
