Leonard Cohen discusses The Future with Peter Gzowski

The Story

"It is America where the real experiment with democracy is going on," says Leonard Cohen. He's discussing the song "Democracy" on his forthcoming album, The Future, with Peter Gzowski on CBC Radio's Morningside. In this long interview, Cohen tells Gzowski about his songwriting process (Democracy had 60 or 70 verses before he settled on the six on the finished version), working with singer Jennifer Warnes, his home in Montreal, and his early years as a poet. "Talk about your voice then and your voice now," says Gzowsi. "Fifty thousand cigarettes have deepened my voice," replies Cohen.
