Frank Zappa on CBC-TV in 1969

The Story

"You're being victimized right now. Do you know it?" Frank Zappa is looking right into the camera to address viewers of CBC-TV's The Day It Is because TV, he says, is sick. A thoughtful Zappa is in the studio for an interview with host Warren Davis before his band, the Mothers of Invention, is scheduled to play a Toronto gig. In this clip, they discuss TV violence, dirty words, exploitation and revolution.

Did You know?

• The Mothers of Invention played Massey Hall that night. A reviewer for the Toronto Star wrote: "Zappa's men are freaky, long-haired and vulgar in an engaging way, and their music, when it isn't parodying something out of the creepy past, is pushing violently against traditional forms... Zappa is one of the music and theatrical wizards of the day."

• Frank Zappa was born in Baltimore in 1940 and joined the Mothers of Invention in 1965. He died in 1993.
