Shirley Giles, first woman bank manager in Canada

The Story

Three years into her job as a branch manager with the Bank of Nova Scotia, Shirley Giles is still met with surprise when people learn her title. In 1964, she talks to Take 30 host Anna Cameron about engaging in courses and conferences to enhance her work experience and how much she enjoys working with and helping people.

Did You know?

• The other woman who was appointed a bank branch manager, on Sept. 11, 1961, was Gladys Marcellus, who was in Ottawa.  

• The Globe and Mail reported on June 3, 1963 that both women attended the the International conference of the National Association of Bank-Women, the first such meeting "ever to be held in Canada." At that time there were three other women bank managers in Canada.
