Author Beverly Cleary on writing for children

The Story


Children’s author Beverly Cleary is in Vancouver to accept the 1968 Young Reader’s Choice Award from the Pacific Northwest Library Association for her book The Mouse and the Motorcycle. The popular author sits down to answer a few questions from a CBC interviewer, and she tells him how she writes from a child’s viewpoint, her approach to writing humour, and how she manages language and vocabulary in her writing.

Did You know?


• Beverly Cleary was born Beverly Bunn on Apr. 12, 1916, near Yamhill, Oregon, and moved to Portland as a child. She earned a Library of Science degree in 1939, and worked briefly as a children's librarian. She published her first book, Henry Huggins, in 1950. In 2000, she was named a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress.

• Cleary was in Vancouver in 1968 to attend the Pacific Northwest Library Association Conference. She won the the association's Young Reader's Choice Award that year for the book The Mouse and the Motorcycle. The contest had 44,000 participants that year. She won again in 1957 for Henry and Ribsy, in 1960 for Henry and the Paper Route, in 1971 for Ramona the Pest and again in 1980 for Ramona and Her Father. Her last book, Ramona’s World, was a finalist in 2002.

• To honour her 100th birthday in 2016, HarperCollins published special editions of three of her most popular books: Henry Huggins, Ramona Quimby, Age 8, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

• The Pacific Northwest Library Association is "binational", with members mostly from the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Washington and the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.
