Actor Eric Peterson stumps the panel on Front Page Challenge

The Story

Billy Bishop was a First World War flying ace brought vividly to life by the 1978 John Gray play Billy Bishop Goes to War. On stage and for a 1982 TV movie adaptation, the man who brought him to life -- and 12 other characters besides -- is actor Eric Peterson. In 1983, after winning an ACTRA Award for his performance, Peterson is the mystery guest on the CBC-TV quiz show Front Page Challenge.

Medium: Television
Broadcast Date: Oct. 19, 1983
Program: Front Page Challenge

Did You know?

• Contrary to the panellists' concerns in this program, Eric Peterson managed to find roles beyond Billy Bishop. From 1987 to 1994 he played left-leaning lawyer Leon Robinovitch on the CBC-TV drama series Street Legal, and for six seasons from 2004 to 2009 he played the cranky father on CTV's Corner Gas. For some of that time (2004-2006) he also played a judge on another CBC series, This is Wonderland.

• Peterson and costar John Gray reprised their roles onstage and on TV for a new, updated  version of Billy Bishop Goes to War in 2009. (They had previously revised it for the stage in 1998 as well.) "Each time it's allowed us not to just remount it but to re-interpret it," Peterson told CBC in 2010. "It's been a great little creative engine in itself."
