A down-home visit with Don Messer and his Islanders

The Story

In 1960, Don Messer's Jubilee is one of the most popular programs on CBC Television, bringing in two-and-a-half million viewers each week. CBC's Close-Up has sent Max Ferguson to Halifax, where the show is produced, to chat with fiddler and band leader Don Messer, vocalists Marg Osburne and Charlie Chamberlain, and emcee Don Tremaine.

• Don Messer's Jubilee began airing on CBC-TV as a summer replacement for Country Hoedown in 1959. It went on to become one of the most popular shows on the air, but was cancelled in 1969. 

• Don Messer was born in Tweedside, N.B. on May 9, 1909.  He died in Halifax on March 26, 1973.  

• Charlie Chamberlain was born on July 14, 1911 in Bathurst, N.B., and died there on July 16, 1972.

• Marg Osburne was born in Moncton, N.B. on Dec. 29, 1926, and died in Rocklyn, Ont. on July 16, 1977.
