Marquee arts and cultural calendar - October 26, 2015

The world premiere of Max Fraser's new documentary "Bond of Strangers - The Operation Husky Story" is showing tomorrow.

It's a special Remembrance film to help reclaim lost history of Canadians in World War Two.

Local filmmaker Max Fraser and author Mark Zuehlke are teaming up for events in a string of Canadian cities during this fall's Remembrance season.

Both the film and the book deal with Operation Husky, the 1943 invasion of Sicily, and the 70th anniversary pilgrimage that took place in July 2013.

The tour begins tomorrow night in Whitehorse at the Yukon Arts Centre. It starts at 7:30pm.


October is Autism Awareness Month.

In celebration of that, Autism Yukon will be hosting a Family Movie Night.

It will be showing the film, Temple Grandin, on Wednesday night.

That's in recognition of the fact that Autism Yukon will bring Temple Grandin herself to visit Whitehorse next March.

This week's Family Movie Night will be at the Beringia Interpretive Centre on Wednesday night.

Doors will open at 6:30 and the movie will start at 7pm.


Ashu Duo is coming to the Yukon this Friday.

He was set to come earlier this year but the show had to be postponed.

He'll be on stage Friday night at the Yukon Arts Centre.

Ashu Duo has shown that the concert saxophone can attract younger and new listeners into the concert hall.

He'll be joined on stage by award-winning pianist Alexandre Moutouzkine.

If you still have tickets that you purchased from last season for Ashu Duo, you can use them for this re-scheduled concert.

If you can't find them, call the box office at the Yukon Arts Centre and they'll reprint the tickets for you.

There are seats available too.


There's jazz on Wednesday at the Wheelhouse Restaurant.

This week features Trio Manouche with its mix of gypsy, Latin and romantic jazz tunes. Music starts at 6pm.


Blues artist Terry Gillespie is touring northern Yukon.

He's playing Old Crow tonight and tomorrow night.

Then he wraps up his tour in Inuvik Wednesday.

Halloween is coming up this weekend and there are lots of events all week long.

Wednesday night, the Yukon Film Society and the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Society are showing the film, What We Do in the Shadows.

It's is a cheeky comedy about vampires trying to get by in the modern world.

It's not recommended for children under 12. The film starts at 8pm.

Come in costume if you can...


The Music, Art and Drama 9/10 class presents its annual haunted house this week.

This year's MADnificent Castle will feature an opening spectacle set during a medieval wedding.

It features acrobats, jesters, ballerinas and more.

Come wander through the rooms of this MADnificent castle and face the unknown if you dare. There are videos in the gym for the faint of heart.

Evening shows are at the Wood Street Centre this Wednesday to Friday.

Show times are 6:30 and 8pm.

It's pretty scary, so they're suggesting it may be too intense for children under grade 4.


The Guild presents its Haunted House this week.

This year, you're dared to "Escape the Asylum."

They dare you look into the Mirror Haunt's eyes.

And ask if you're brave enough to enter the haunted Children's Ward?

This is a full-out fear experience... that they rate PG-13!

Children will not be allowed to enter.

That's Wednesday to Friday at 8pm and Halloween at 11pm ... at the Guild Hall in Porter Creek.


Kona's Coalition is hosting its annual Halloween dance.

MASQ II features music by M-C Flipside with DJKJ and Dash.

That's Saturday night at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.

It's fundraiser for Yukon animals in need!

There are lots of prizes for best costume.

The dance starts Saturday at 8pm.


You can also dress up in your best Halloween Costume and dance the night away to the Latin sounds of DJ Miguel y Lucia from Salsa Yukon.

Hear the latest Salsa, Merengue and even some Kizomba music ALL NIGHT LONG!

That's Saturday at 9pm at the Wheelhouse Restaurant.


In Mayo, the RCMP are hosting a Halloween party for the children.

That's from 3-5pm at the Community Hall.

There'll be a Masquerade Dance at 9pm... featuring live music by Retrospect.


The City of Whitehorse is hosting a Halloween Spooktacular.

That's Saturday from 3-6pm at the Canada Games Centre.


Heart of Riverdale is hosting a Monster Mash Halloween Party.

That's from 4-7pm on Saturday ...upstairs and The Heart of Riverdale on Lewes Boulevard.


And Yukon Rendezvous is holding a Back to the Future 2 Dance Party.

That's Friday night at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.

Major Funk and the Employment will keep everyone on the dance floor.

That's Friday at 8pm.
