Shadows on Sparks Street

This week on And The Winner Is...Sarah Boothroyd explores the mysterious murder of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, the only Canadian federal politician ever to be assassinated.

In 1868, the Dominion of Canada was just a year old. In April of that year, Thomas D'Arcy McGee, a founding father of Confederation, was shot dead just a few blocks from Parliament Hill. The alleged assassin was arrested within twenty-four hours. But the question is: was he the real killer or was someone else waiting for Mr. McGee in the shadows of Sparks street in Ottawa that night.

In this week's episode of "And The Winner Is..." Sarah Boothroyd explores this mystery, drawing on archival material, and the expertise of historians David Wilson and David Shanahan, as well as lawyer Lawrence Greenspon. Shadows On Sparks Street was produced by Yvonne Gall. It originally aired on Ideas in December of 2009 and in 2010  it was recognized with a Bronze Medal at the New York Festivals.
