Like just about everybody else, Gary Doer said he'll be watching the American election on Tuesday night, and he expects it to be a close race.

"The last election was very, very close," Doer said Thursday. "The map hasn't changed. The electoral votes allocated to each state hasn't changed."

"When we look ahead to Tuesday night, wear a helmet, because it's going to be pretty interesting."

Formerly the premier of Manitoba, Doer also served as the Canadian ambassador to the United States from 2009 until March of this year. He now works for the global law firm Dentons.

'He's a marketer'

On Thursday, Doer spoke at a Nature Conservancy of Canada event drumming up financial support.

Afterward, CBC asked him to weigh in on politics south of the border.

Doer said he'll be keeping his eye on results from Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.

Doer said he wasn't surprised in July to see Donald Trump clinch the spot as Republican nominee.

"Whether I agreed with his message or not, he had a very clear message running against 16 other people, and in a primary you only need to get about 30 per cent of a vote to eventually become the nominee," Doer said. "He's a marketer."

Doer wouldn't say who he expected to win, but he did say this:

"I expect that whoever's elected, they'll exceed expectations. Why? Because expectations seem to be very low right now."
