South Asian film festival in Montreal

Fandry poster.jpg
The 4th annual South Asian Film Festival opens today in Montreal. The festival highlights new and notable films from South Asia. This year, that list includes Canadian director Deepa Mehta's Midnight's Children, based on Salman Rushdie's Booker-winning novel.  AND, today's opener, the award-winning Indian film Fandry. It's a love story but it deals with caste descrimination in a village in the state of Maharashtra.

Catherine Bernier is a programmer for the South Asian Film Festival. Diana Dimitrova is a professor of Hinduism and South Asian religions at Universit√© de Montreal. She's also part of the panel discussion that will take place after the screening of Fandry at 1pm today.
