Being Chinese in Quebec

BeingChineseinQuebec_movie.jpgIt's the beginning of the Lunar New Year today - or, as many of us know it, the Chinese New Year - and there's a timely new documentary about the Chinese community in Quebec.

It's a sort of bilingual road movie called Etre Chinois au Québec (Being Chinese in Quebec).

Two young Chinese-Canadians who have decided to call Quebec their home travel from Montreal to Gaspé, meeting Chinese-Quebeckers along the way - and talking about language and identity.

Their trip takes place against the backdrop of the apology by the Canadian government to the Chinese community for past injustices, including the infamous Head Tax on Chinese immigrants between 1923 and 1947.

Bethany Or and Winston Chan joined Sonali Karnick in-studio.
