Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Video Hits

Video_Hits_title.jpgIt is an anniversary so momentous we are chagrined and appalled that it passed us by without more notice.
How, to use the parlance of the day, totally un-awesome of us.
Ladies and gentlemen, THIS show premiered 30 years ago this month..

The one and only VIDEO HITS with host Samantha Taylor.

Samantha_Taylor.jpgThis was when not every kid in the country had access to Much Music or MTV (and Much and MTV still played a lot of music videos), so Samantha Taylor was your best bet to find out the hottest music videos of the day. Alan remembers 5:00 p.m. on CBC being "appointment television", sitting down to see what Sam Taylor would broadcast from her multi-coloured couch.

So, in honour of the 30-year anniversary of the show, Alan thought he'd find footage of that first show.
Or perhaps find out what videos were played. But there's just one problem: the Samantha Taylor era of VIDEO HITS no longer exists in the CBC Archives.
There are a few clips here and there on YouTube, but nothing else.

What the CBC Reference library was able to find, however, was a partial list of videos played in October 1984 -- click below for that list. So throughout October, if there is a song on this list you would like to hear, or video you remember fondly, or perhaps video you do NOT remember and would love to know more about... this is your chance.
Pick a song from the list and send us a note and let us know why.
And let the memories of Video Hits live forever in your hearts.

(By the way, if someone out there DOES have Video Hits footage on a VHS tape from 1984, you may have the only existing copy! Let us know!)

Songs from the Video Hits playlist already claimed:

"HERE SHE COMES" (Bonnie Tyler)

chosen by Alan as a song he had no memory of whatsoever

"GO INSANE" (Lindsey Buckingham)
chosen by listener Karen Colvin ("what kind of hair product does Buckingham use to achieve that kind of hair height?")

chosen by listener Mike Allen ("With Martha Johnson leading the way and dancing us through the "medium", the video is, what can I say, refreshing.")

"IT AIN'T ENOUGH" (Corey Hart)
chosen by listener Mary Lee McCormick ("You can't miss those incredible lips at the beginning, then he gives you that deep penetrating look")
"OUT OF TOUCH" (Hall and Oates)
chosen by listener Marie-France ("I was not even born in 1984, but have learnt and fallen in love with Hall and Oates! I think what I enjoy so much about the video is the risks taken by the artist.."
"TEACHER TEACHER" (.38 Special)
chosen by listener Mike ("Perfectly representative of my high school experience in the early 80's. It's amazing anybody learned anything at all.")
Chosen by our guest host, Giacomo Panico
"WARRIOR" (Patty Smyth)
chosen by listener Carly ("Considering that I find the 1980s to be a very dark time for rock and roll, Ms Smyth made a gallant effort with her strong voice and strange dancers. As a little girl I did notice that she portrayed a strong woman and I liked her at the end shouting 'Victory is mine!'... I thought she looked rather cute and happy.")
Note: listener and local singer-songwriter Chris Page also wrote a whole blog post about "Warrior"! Read it here.
chosen by listener Brandon ("I was 6 years old in 1984 and was told I was NOT allowed to watch Video Hits because my father didn't clue in the people fighting on screen were part of a music video.")
