Horned Grebe vs. Highways
Saskatchewan Highways and infrastructure have run into a different kind of roadblock at the site of one of their construction projects: the Horned Grebe.
Nine of this bird's nests have been discovered near the bridge project at St. Louis. Sask. naturalists know it as a "common summer visitor" in the province, but some contracting crews had to stop work within a 100 metre radius of the nests, because it's protected by the federal government.
Craig talks to Kirsten Leatherdale at Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure, and wildlife biologist Kirsten Alm from the environmental consulting company that searched for the nests and made the call.
