City of Vancouver brings together Aboriginal and cultural groups for unique Dialogues Project

Friday, Apr 16, 2010 | 4:50 PM

A City of Vancouver project that brings together Vancouver's diverse cultural groups is designed to bring greater interaction, understanding and opportunity for our Aboriginal and immigrant communities.

The Dialogues Project consists of a year-long series of interviews, dialogue circles, cultural exchanges and other activities. The project kicked off today with opening ceremonies at UBC.

"Vancouver is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, and engaging individuals and communities through a project like this strengthens and builds on our existing relationships," Mayor Gregor Robertson said. "When we invite people to come together to get to know one-another, we create a more vibrant, connected city that leads to stronger appreciation of our differences and shared experiences.

"The Dialogues Project is a unique collaboration in the way it builds bridges between Aboriginal and immigrant communities, and we're very proud to lead this initiative."

The project is a collaboration between the City of Vancouver and over 20 community partners, including the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish First Nations, the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre, the University of British Columbia and key immigrant-serving organizations such as SUCCESS and MOSAIC. The Province of BC and Government of Canada have contributed funding to the project.

The launch of the Dialogues Project was marked with a cultural performance and celebration at the UBC First Nations House of Learning.
