Riding Profile:
Whitehorse West used to be the largest riding in the Yukon, with more than 2,000
voters in 2000, but it was carved in half just prior to the 2002 election to create
a new riding, Copperbelt. Now only the subdivisions of Logan, Arkell and part
of Copper Ridge lie within the boundaries of Whitehorse West. It wasn't the first
time that the riding's booming population had spurred boundary changes since Whitehorse
West was created in 1978.
The population seems destined to grow further, with more new lots planned within
the riding. Unlike other areas in Whitehorse, people in the riding do not object
to further development – perhaps because the constituency borders on
kilometres of wilderness.

Political History:
The riding was an NDP stronghold held by Tony Penikett from 1978 until he
retired from politics in 1995, including the seven years that Penikett served
as the territory's leader. David Sloan managed to hang on to the riding for the NDP
through the ensuing byelection and next general election, but lost to the Liberals
in 2000. The Yukon Party's Elaine Taylor, who has been the minister of tourism
for the past four years, made a bid for the seat in 2000 but didn't win it until 2002.
