Bernie McNamee has been in front of a microphone for more than 35 years. He fell in love with broadcast journalism while working part time at a local radio station in his hometown of St. Catharines, Ont. while attending college. Upon graduation, Bernie was hired as a reporter-newscaster at CKNX TV and Radio in Wingham, Ontario. Two years later, he moved to Ottawa to take a position as a newcaster with CFRA Radio.
After four years in the nation's capital, Bernie signed on with CKEY Radio in Toronto as a general assignment reporter and newscaster. He then joined several colleagues and moved over to CKO-All News Radio for three years.
The bright lights of television beckoned and Bernie was hired by CTV Toronto, where he worked as a general assignment reporter and line-up editor. After four years at CTV, Bernie decided to try freelancing and worked for several independent television producers as a host/producer. For a year, he travelled extensively as host of the internationally syndicated television program Travel Magazine.
In 1989, Bernie launched his career at the CBC, working part time in the local radio newsroom in Toronto. He was hired by National Radio News as an overnight newscaster and then moved onto the "day-side", hosting several news programs including Weekend World Report.
Bernie was part of the team that launched The World This Weekend in 1995, and he hosted the show for four years. He then moved over to the hosting chair at Canada at Five and the Radio One Business Network. In 2003, Bernie was promoted to the co-host position on the nightly flagship newscast The World at Six. In recent years, Bernie and the program have gone "on the road" to broadcast from locations across the country and undertook a weeklong broadcast from China.
His other duties include hosting news specials for CBC National Radio News. Bernie has also taught broadcast journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto and his alma mater, Niagara College in Welland, Ont.
When he's not at the microphone, Bernie spends a lot of time trying to keep up with Kano, his energetic and high-maintenance Jack Russell terrier.
