Today marks one month since a powerful earthquake devastated Haiti.
The latest figures say more than 200,000 people died in the disaster.
This stories of grief from Haiti have obviously had a deep impact on Canadians.
International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda says donations from Canadians have reached a staggering $113 million dollars.
The federal government will match the final figure from all personal donations collected until today.
But the scope of the devastation, and the work ahead, is even more staggering.
One million Haitians are displaced.
About 500,000 of them are living in crowded and unsanitary make-shift camps.
Yesterday it rained in Port-au-prince disrupting relief efforts.
It was a glimpse of more misery ahead as the spring rainy season draws closer.
Aid organizations are trying to get quake survivors into more suitable accommodation before then.
The government of Haiti has declared today a national day of mourning.
CBC's David Gutnick will be on the show speaking to us from Port-au-Prince.

Nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be announced today. But this year, the folks at the Academy are shaking things up a little. 10 movies, instead of the usual 5, will be nominated in the Best Picture category.
The last time this happened was in 1943 when "Casablanca" took home the hardware.
Some say this gives genres that have typically been sidelined, like comedies and animated movies, a fair chance at the big prize. It probably won't hurt the TV ratings either. Oscar has more eyeballs on him when a major commercial hit is nominated.
Whatever the reason, most critics agree this year's major box office hit "Avatar" will make the cut, along with "Up in the Air", "Hurt Locker" and "Invictus".
Some say the expanded list might also allow for the animated movie "Up" and sci-fi hits "Star Trek" and "District 9" a shot at Oscar glory.
You can see the full list once it has been released here.
But while you wait for the best of the year, you can check out the worst of the year.
This years Razzie nominations are already out. Sandra Bullock who is expected to get an Oscar nod for her role in "The Blind Side", is also up for a Razzie for "All About Steve".
Could she be the best and worst actress of the year at the same time?

Apple will reveal its "latest creations" at a press event in San Francisco.
Speculation is, the widely anticipated Apple tablet will be among them.
Like the iPhone and the iPod before it - the announcement of the new product has been shrouded in mystery.
We know Apple has been in talks with the New York Times, NewsCorp and other media companies.
So the tablet is likely to have an e-reader component to access books, newspapers and magazines.
That has the New York Times guessing at whether it could help save the print industry.
Traditional media outlets have been struggling with how to make money with their online content.
The Guardian says - from home entertainment to gaming - the device could change the way we do just about everything.
One thing's for sure - it's going to be pretty and everyone is going to want one.

It's a debate that's been raging in France for years.
Last summer French President Nicholas Sarkozy said "The burqa is not welcome in France".
That lead to an inquiry into whether women in France should be allowed to wear the traditional Muslim covering.
Today the results of that investigation are out. It's a controversial and complex story, and Genevieve Oger will break it down for us on the show.

An Ipsos poll for Le Point magazine claims 57 per cent of French people support banning the burqa.
But many in the French Muslim community say that will alienate Muslims and violates civil rights. Incidentally, there is at least one Imam in France who actually supports the ban. He argues the covering has no basis in Islam.
France has traditionally upheld the separation of faith and state. But The Economist predicts lawmakers will face criticism from the global community if the ban is enforced.

An effort to make the Vancouver Olympics the most environmentally sustainable is coming under fire from an usual corner.
Environmentalists are criticising a decision to use hydrogen buses during the games.

As Curt Petrovich has been reporting this morning, the buses are being called little more than very expensive window dressing.

* The buses cost more than two million dollars each... four times the price of a diesel model.
* The hydrogen fuel has to be trucked from a plant in Quebec.
* And during the Olympics bus emissions will actually increase when BC transit relies on more than 100 additional diesel buses to handle demand.

The David Suzuki foundation has panned the 89 million dollar project.
Former BC transit planner Stephen Rees says the money would be better spent bringing bus service to people who don't already have it.

"we can provide zero emission electric transport now - very effecitvely - using very old fashoined technolgoy like street cars or trolley buses."

John Tack is president of the canadian hydrogen and fuel cell association - who's industry members built the buses.

"The only thing that's coming out of the tailpipe is water vapour and heat - so that's where we need to go in terms of transportation in getting rid of pollution and green house gases."

The buses will keep rolling well after the Olympics.
BC Transit will evaluate how well they performed, in four years.
It's one of the most important dates on the true tech geek's calendar.
The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicks off today in Las Vegas.
Every year the biggest companies introduce their new products at the event - and this year is no different.
Pundits are predicting that 3D televisions will be one of the big things to come out of CES 2010.

The success of 3D movies like "Up" and "Avatar" seems to have brought about a new era for entertainment.
But before the show even got underway LG made waves in the world of home entertainment.
Yesterday they unveiled a flat screen TV so thin - it'll give the set you have at home serious body image issues.

Amazon's "Kindle" - a device to read electronic books on - saw huge sales near the end of last year.
So tech gurus say more companies will be introducing E-readers at CES this year as well.

But don't take my word for it...
Peter Nowak is in Las Vegas and will have more on the must-have gadgets of 2010 on the show.

Next time you take a flight you could be subjected to a full-body scan.
The government says full-body scanners, that can see through a passenger's clothes, are coming to airports in a number of Canadian cities.
That includes Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver.
The system allows a screening officer to see whether someone is carrying explosives.
The ramped up airport security here and in the U-S comes after an alleged terrorist tried to blow up a plane headed for Detroit on Christmas day.
But privacy advocates say the scanners are invasive.
The Huffington Post has an article on concerns in the U.K. about whether the machines violate child pornography laws.
The European Union is meeting this week to talk about whether the scanners should be introduced in airports across Europe.
The Sydney Morning Herald has an article on similar privacy concerns there.

So what's your take ? Are you concerned about privacy? Or will the scanners actually make flying safer for us all ?
Have your say here.

Some consumers and doctors are becoming convinced vitamin D can help reduce the risk of a long list of diseases, despite a lack of gold-standard research proving it.

A growing body of research suggests that supplements of the so-called sunshine vitamin may reduce the risk of multiple sclerosis, diabetes and breast and prostate cancers.

But much of the research comes from observational studies rather than placebo-controlled trials -- the highest standard in health research. Such rigorous trials to prove vitamin D's preventive benefits are expensive, and since vitamins can't be patented, pharmaceutical companies have no financial incentive to do the research.

... officially opens today in Dubai.

In the midst of highly-publicized financial trouble, the city-state will cling to its reputation for the big and shiny with a fireworks display to mark the Burj Dubai's opening.

The building itself certainly captures attention. Check out the photo gallery on The Guardian's Web site.

Reaching more than 800 metres into the sky, the Burj Dubai shatters previous records.
Its observation deck will be on the 124th floor - and it boasts the highest occupied floor in the world.

You can see how the tower compares to other buildings on the BBC's page here.

To put it all into a Canadian perspective, the Dubai tower is at least 250 metres taller than our own C.N. Tower.

But behind all the glitz and glamour lurk some darker issues. Human rights groups are concerned about the treatment of migrant construction workers. Al Jazeera briefly mentions that angle in its coverage today - you can read that here.

Passengers flying into the United States from 14 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria and Yemen, will be subjected to enhanced screening techniques, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration said Sunday.

Starting Monday, all travellers on U.S.-bound overseas flights will be subject to random screening, TSA said. Airports are also directed to increase "threat-based" screening of passengers who may be acting in a suspicious manner.

The State Department lists Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria as state sponsors of terrorism. The other countries whose passengers will face enhanced screening include Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen.

The US and The UK closed their embassies in Yemen this weekend over fears that Al Qaeda was planning an attack.

Meanwhile, new concerns are being raised about Yemeni prisoners released from Guantanamo Bay. Republican Pete Hoekstra says some of them are back in action, part of the group taking credit for the attempt to bring down a US airliner on Christmas Day.

"The core group of al qaeda on the arabian peninsula is formed by former gitmo detainees," he said. "These were people who were held in Gitmo, been returned and now gone back to the battlefield."

US President Barack Obama returns to Washington today from his vacation in Hawaii. Yemen, it seems, will be top of the agenda.
