A pickup truck laden with explosives blew up in front of a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing at least three people and wounding 20 others.
A police official said officers opened fire on the vehicle as it approached a checkpoint in front of the police station, but the driver was able to detonate his explosives.
The blast partly damaged the station and destroyed a small mosque and a house in Badh Ber, 12 kilometres south of the main northwestern city of Peshawar.
Liaqat Ali Khan, Peshawar's senior police chief, said police and rescue workers were searching through the debris for the dead and injured.
Militants have killed more than 300 civilians and security personnel in the last month in an attempt to weaken Pakistan's resolve to continue a military offensive in the tribal area of South Waziristan, where Taliban and al-Qaeda leaders are believed to be hiding.
More than 50 people have been killed in the area around Peshawar in a little over a week.
