Gary Doer, Canada's new ambassador to the United States, received his credentials from President Barack Obama on Wednesday. (CBC)Gary Doer, Canada's new ambassador to the United States, met with President Barack Obama in Washington Wednesday to receive his credentials.
Doer, who was accompanied by his wife and daughters, said he had a brief discussion about "Buy American" policies with the president.
"My duty is to make sure we repeat it over and over and over again until we get a reasonable agreement with the United States on it," Doer said.
Doer said he will keep reminding political leaders that jobs in the U.S. also rely on "two-way trade" with Canada.
"It's a marathon right now in terms of the status of those negotiations," Doer said. "There's discussions, but it's obviously not resolved."
Doer stepped down as premier of Manitoba in late August, after 10 years in the province's top job.
Doer is following the career path of former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna. The Liberal politician also stepped down on his 10th anniversary of becoming premier, and then went on to represent Canada in the United States.
