This week on The Next Chapter, Shelagh Rogers talks to Meg Federico about her poignant, and hilarious memoir, Welcome to The Departure Lounge (Doubleday).
Federico finds out first hand that being part of the “sandwich generation” can be quite a handful. When her fiercely independent eighty-one year old mother and her new husband both suddenly require full-time help, Federico finds that their behaviour is as troubling as out-of-control teens. For example, forbidden from drinking, they try to smuggle in cases of scotch, and sex toys arrive in the mail.
Federico is a freelance writer. Her work has appeared in the National Post, The Globe and Mail, Halifax Daily News and she has produced documentaries for CBC Radio. She lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with her own growing family.
Also on the show, Rogers talks to historian Stephen Kimber about the idea of truth in non-fiction, and gossip queen Lainey Lui gives an update on the books she’s currently reading.
First aired Saturday, April 4, 2009, on The Next Chapter.
