The Next Chapter wraps up a month-long series on mystery novels with a look at Pat Capponi's The Corpse Will Keep (Harper Collins).
Shelagh Rogers met up with Capponi in the author's downtown Toronto neighbourhood, Parkdale, to talk about the author's inspiration for this latest mystery. The novel features Inspector Dara Leoni and a crew of misfit sleuths.
Leoni's current case takes her from homeless shelters in Parkdale to the upscale neighbourhood of Rosedale, as a charge of extortion expands to include kidnapping and murder.
Capponi has written several best-selling non-fiction books, most notably Upstairs in the Crazy House (Penguin), which details her own experiences with homelessness and mental illness. She is now a leading mental health care advocate and has been awarded the Order of Ontario. The Corpse Will Keep is her second work of detective fiction.
Also on the show, Shelagh Rogers speaks to Roy MacGregor about his popular Screech Owls mystery series for kids (McClelland & Stewart), and Sasenarine Persaud about his poetry collection, In a Boston Night (TSAR Publications).
First aired Saturday, March 28, 2009, on The Next Chapter. [runs 17:46]
