CarpentariaEleanor Wachtel traveled to Australia in March to interview a number of writers, including writer and activist Alexis Wright.

This week’s guest is one of the country’s best-known aboriginal authors. Wright’s novel, Carpentaria (Simon & Schuster), has won numerous awards, including Australia's premier literary prize, the Miles Franklin Award.

The story is set in the Gulf country of north-western Queensland and tells the interconnected tales of the inhabitants of the fictional town of Desperance.

Next week, the series continues with three diverse and entertaining writers: Commonwealth Book Prize-winner Christos Tsiolkas, political satirist John Clarke and novelist and journalist Chloe Hooper.

Aired April 12, 2009, on Writers & Company. [runs 52:40]

Writers & Company airs on Thursdays at 11:00 p.m. (11:30 in Newfoundland) and on Sunday afternoons (times vary across the country). You can also listen to the show as a podcast.
